The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has agreed to a resolution proposed by the Philippines and other countries that highlights the important role of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in peacefully resolving disputes.
The resolution asks all UN member countries and organizations to remember and celebrate the 125th anniversary of the PCA.
It also encourages countries to use the services of the PCA, which help promote peace internationally and develop international laws.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) of the Philippines is happy about the UN’s acceptance of the resolution. They see it as another way for the Philippines to support the rule of law and uphold international order by settling disputes peacefully.
The DFA thanked the 122 countries that supported the resolution, especially Australia, Egypt, Guatemala, Hungary, and Thailand, for helping it pass unanimously.
The PCA is an international organization based in The Hague, Netherlands. It offers various ways to resolve disputes among countries. It was established in 1899 and has 122 member countries.
The court uses four of the five dispute resolution methods recommended in Article 33 of the UN Charter, which include inquiry, mediation, conciliation, and arbitration.
The current president of the PCA’s Administrative Council is J. Eduardo Malaya, the Philippine Ambassador.
It’s worth noting that the PCA previously ruled in favor of the Philippines in a case related to the West Philippine Sea in 2016, supporting the Philippines’ claims in that area.
