Filipino survivors of Typhoon Odette are filing a civil lawsuit in the United Kingdom against British oil giant Shell, seeking compensation for personal injuries and property damages caused by the 2021 storm.
The case, involving 67 claimants mostly from the Visayas, is the Philippines’ first climate-related suit following the International Court of Justice ruling allowing vulnerable nations to seek reparations from major polluters.
Survivors allege Shell’s historic carbon emissions worsened extreme weather events like Odette, which killed 405 people, injured 1,400, and caused P47.8 billion in damages.
While acknowledging the challenges of taking on a global energy giant, claimants emphasize that the lawsuit is about justice and exposing the direct impacts of major oil and gas companies on vulnerable communities.
Climate advocates say the case could set a precedent, empowering other affected communities to hold major polluters accountable for climate-related destruction.
