Over 180 Filipino fisherfolk from Zambales, Cagayan, and Sulu were trained in sustainable fishing practices and maritime rights through a U.S.-supported program running from June 2024 to May 2025.
The “Empowering Coastal Communities in the Philippines” program included workshops led by the Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Police, and the Bureau of Fisheries to combat illegal fishing and promote maritime law enforcement.
The training also introduced alternative livelihoods amid rising maritime tensions affecting traditional fishing areas.
A key achievement was the creation of three fisherfolk cooperatives that will provide support and income opportunities while strengthening their role in coastal governance.
U.S. and local officials emphasized the program’s importance in building resilience, restoring fish stocks, and upholding the Philippines’ sovereign maritime rights.
