Her term, as stated in an appointment letter dated October 16, 2024, will run until February 2, 2029.

Barua-Yap replaces Karlo Alexei Nograles, who resigned to pursue a mayoral run in Davao City.

She is currently a lecturer at the University of the Philippines and an undersecretary at the Department of Agrarian Reform.

Barua-Yap was also the first woman to serve as secretary general of the House of Representatives in the 14th and 15th Congresses.
