Seven major companies at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) development have voluntarily agreed to take steps to make AI technology safer.
During a White House event, US President Joe Biden expressed concerns about the potential misuse of AI and emphasized the responsibility of companies to ensure the safety of their products.
Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Anthropic, Inflection, OpenAI, and Microsoft (a partner of OpenAI) have committed to thorough testing of AI systems before release, sharing knowledge to reduce AI risks, developing a content watermarking system for AI-generated content, prioritizing user privacy, and eliminating bias in AI technology to avoid discrimination against vulnerable groups among others.
These actions are intended to make AI technology more reliable, trustworthy, and less susceptible to misuse.
For example, the watermarking system will assist users in identifying deep-fake content that could potentially spread misinformation or harm individuals.
Although it is not specified how the watermark will be visible during content sharing, the companies have pledged to develop effective methods.
Additionally, the companies aim to use AI for positive purposes, such as addressing scientific challenges in fields like medical research and climate change mitigation.
While some commitments involve third-party oversight of AI systems, the details of who will conduct audits or hold companies accountable are not yet disclosed.
Nonetheless, the voluntary commitments are steps in the right direction to promote the responsible development and deployment of AI technology.
