As millions of Filipinos head to the polls, public school teachers are at the forefront of ensuring the sanctity of the vote.
Mandated by the Automated Election Law, teachers serve as members of electoral boards, managing tasks such as verifying identities, issuing ballots, and operating automated machines.
In addition to their critical responsibilities, teachers assist elderly voters, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women, providing essential support throughout the election process.
To ensure the elections are peaceful and transparent, the Department of Education (DepEd), Comelec, the AFP, and the PNP signed a memorandum to collaborate in safeguarding the vote.
Despite the vital role teachers play, DepEd stresses that the participation of teachers in elections is no longer mandatory, with the option to assign other qualified individuals if needed.
