SUPREME COURT PERMITS PLUNDER TRIAL AGAINST ENRILE TO PROCEED

The Supreme Court has allowed the Sandiganbayan to proceed with the plunder trial of former Senator and current Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, Juan Ponce Enrile.

The court unanimously rejected Enrile’s petition to stop the case, in which he is accused of misappropriating over P172 million in pork barrel funds.

The Supreme Court emphasized that doubts about the Sandiganbayan’s fairness and the admissibility of evidence presented by the prosecution were insufficient grounds to halt the trial.

Enrile’s motion for a bill of particulars was partially granted earlier, but his later appeals for case dismissal and evidence limitations were denied.

Enrile, who is 100 years old, was granted bail in 2015 due to health reasons but continues to face trial proceedings.
