Local sugar farmers expressed concerns to the Senate over a bill that could temporarily suspend the mandatory use of locally sourced biofuels.
Renato Cabati, president of the Ethanol Producers Association of the Philippines, warned that suspending the requirement would reduce demand for molasses, which makes up 13% of many farmers’ income.
The Senate Committee on Energy, led by Sen. Pia Cayetano, heard that Senate Bill No. 1485 would allow suspension if blended fuel prices rise by more than 5% above those of pure fuels.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin emphasized that any suspension would be temporary and intended to stabilize fuel prices amid supply risks.
Senators and farmers discussed protective measures, including subsidies, to support the local biofuel industry while balancing consumer costs.
