Smart Communications Inc. has teamed up with California-based lender PayJoy to provide smartphone loans to Filipinos, helping accelerate the country’s shift to 4G and 5G technology.
The initiative allows users to purchase devices without a credit card—just a valid ID and phone number—making credit access simpler and faster.
Payments can be made weekly over four, six, or nine months, targeting consumers new to credit and aiming to expand smartphone ownership to over 80 million in the next four years.
Smart said the partnership supports the national goal of retiring outdated 2G and 3G networks, which currently account for only 15% of mobile users.
With 97% population coverage in 4G and 5G, Smart continues to lead Philippine telcos in high-speed connectivity.
