Senators are urging the government to accelerate preparations for a potentially severe Super El Niño in 2027, warning of threats to water supplies, food security, public health and livelihoods.
During budget hearings for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Education, lawmakers proposed practical measures to protect vulnerable communities.
These include rainwater harvesting, alternative drinking water sources, cooling centers, drought-resistant crops and improved school safety measures.
They stressed that preparations and funding must be in place before prolonged dry spells and extreme heat cause greater damage to households and agriculture.
The lawmakers said early government action is essential to reduce the possible impact of drought and rising temperatures on Filipinos.
