Filipina boxer Aira Villegas stunned No. 2 seed Roumaysa Boualam of Algeria to advance to the quarterfinals in the women’s 50kg competition at the Paris Olympics.
Villegas, who celebrated her 29th birthday, strategically outmaneuvered Boualam with quick movements and precise headshots, securing a unanimous decision victory.
Although the later rounds were more competitive, Villegas’ clean punches were decisive in earning all the judges’ scorecards.
She joins fellow Filipino boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam in the medal hunt.
Villegas will face Wassilia Lkhadiri of France in the quarterfinals on August 4.
