Senator Grace Poe is advocating for her bill to establish a dedicated Bureau of Animal Welfare under the Department of Agriculture (DA).
During a recent budget hearing, she urged the DA to allocate specific funding for essential programs, including neutering, spaying, anti-rabies efforts, and pound maintenance, while the proposed law is still under consideration in the Senate.
Poe emphasized the need for the budget to reflect animal welfare priorities, stating, “We must put our money where our advocacy is.”
Additionally, her Senate Bill No. 2458 aims to amend the existing Animal Welfare Law to introduce stricter standards, tougher penalties, and the formation of a Barangay Animal Welfare Task Force.
Last May, Poe expressed concerns about the potential misplacement of animal welfare responsibilities under the DA’s National Meat Inspection Service.
