Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri expressed strong opposition to Senate Bill No. 1979, warning that it could lead to children experimenting with sex.
Zubiri, a conservative lawmaker, criticized the bill’s proposal to teach children as young as six or seven about sexual activities, including masturbation and condom use, arguing it could promote early sexual experimentation.
He highlighted concerns about increasing adolescent pregnancies due to such teachings and emphasized the Philippines’ conservative stance on sexuality compared to other countries.
While Zubiri is open to the bill if it focuses solely on protecting pregnant teens, he firmly opposes provisions on sexual education for young children.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros, the bill’s author, defended the legislation against misinformation, saying it aimed to protect young people, not promote fear.
