The Office of the Ombudsman alleged that former House Speaker Martin Romualdez has attempted to leave the country through informal channels despite a precautionary hold departure order issued by the Sandiganbayan.
Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano said a plunder complaint against the Leyte congressman has been forwarded for preliminary investigation, with an order for him to file a counter-affidavit expected this week.
Clavano warned that failure to respond after leaving the country could be treated as a waiver of Romualdez’s right to defend himself, adding that the complaint also involves more than 10 other individuals.
Meanwhile, Malacañang said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will not interfere in the Ombudsman’s investigation, stressing that the administration will allow the legal process to proceed based on the evidence.
The Palace also rejected claims of selective prosecution, urging those with evidence to file the appropriate cases.
