Detained former president Rodrigo Duterte expressed pride and concern for Vice President Sara Duterte after she announced her 2028 presidential bid, according to her sister Veronica Duterte.
Veronica recalled Duterte’s warning that no honor could compensate for the hardships of being president, echoing his 2021 remark that women were unfit to lead the country.
Sara Duterte is currently facing impeachment complaints, including allegations of fund misuse.
Duterte remains detained in The Hague, awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity linked to his drug war.
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice confirmed that the Philippines can still coordinate with the ICC, despite its 2019 withdrawal from the Rome Statute, to protect Filipino witnesses in the former president’s case.
