Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III is advocating for reforms in the Philippine party-list system, noting that over 70 party-list groups are seeking seats in the House of Representatives for the May 2025 midterm elections.
He highlighted that political families increasingly use the party-list system to accommodate additional family members as they exhaust traditional elective positions.
So far, 73 party-list groups have filed their nominations, many of which are associated with political dynasties.
Pimentel stressed that reforms should come through constitutional amendments, maintaining protections on term limits and term lengths.
He cited successful anti-dynasty measures from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as a model for improving the party-list system, emphasizing the need for persistent efforts to achieve similar reforms in the broader electoral landscape.
