The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) deployed additional medical personnel, including nurses from its Hemodialysis Center and volunteers from the Manila Chapter, to support San Lazaro Hospital amid a rise in leptospirosis cases.
San Lazaro has recorded seven deaths, including a 16-year-old boy, and currently has 78 patients confined with the disease as of August 7.
PRC Chairman Richard Gordon assured that all available resources are being mobilized to assist in managing the situation.
The response follows Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno’s order to fully activate the city’s leptospirosis surge protocol across all six district hospitals.
The mayor also instructed the opening of fast lanes in emergency rooms to accommodate patients transferred from other hospitals.
