Thousands of Davao residents gathered at dawn with lighted candles to celebrate former President Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday, despite his current detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
The celebrations extended globally, with Filipino communities in cities like New York, Toronto, Bahrain, and Tokyo holding rallies and protests calling for Duterte’s release.
In Davao, 600 drones lit up the sky as a tribute to the former president, while his family members, including Vice President Sara Duterte, expressed their support and called for his return to the Philippines.
Duterte’s former executive secretary, Salvador Medialdea, and other family members, including his children, wished him strength and health during his detention.
The Presidential Communications Office also marked Duterte’s birthday by leading a “Happy Birthday” sing-along at a press conference.
