Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte is calling on the cyclist involved in the incident with an ex-policeman who was brandishing a gun to come forward and work with the city government to file necessary legal cases.
The incident, which was captured in a viral video, shows Gonzales driving his red Kia Rio and cutting into the bicycle lane, putting the cyclist in danger. He then hit the cyclist on the head and threatened him with a gun.
Mayor Belmonte assured the cyclist that the city would provide legal assistance and protection to ensure justice is served. She emphasized that she would not allow the case to be covered up.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) held a press conference with Gonzales, where it was announced that an amicable settlement had been reached between him and the cyclist.
However, Mayor Belmonte stated that this culture of impunity is unacceptable in Quezon City, and she is committed to maintaining peace and order.
The city government will support the cyclist if he decides to press charges against Gonzales, including grave threat, slander by deed, reckless imprudence, physical injuries, and violating the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Act.
The city government also highlights two city ordinances, the Road Safety Code and a law promoting safe cycling, penalizing motorists who obstruct cycling lanes or walking paths.
Mayor Belmonte promised to increase the presence of bike patrols to protect cyclists and expressed her gratitude to the Philippine National Police (PNP) for revoking Gonzales’ gun license, registration, and permits.
Mayor Belmonte’s proactive response highlights her commitment to maintaining peace and order in Quezon City and sending a strong message that such acts will not be tolerated.
