Nueva Ecija Vice Governor Anthony Umali has responded to reelectionist Cabanatuan City Mayor Myca Vergara, defending his petition to declare her a nuisance candidate based on the Omnibus Election Code.
Umali, who is challenging Vergara for the Cabanatuan mayoralty in the upcoming 2025 elections, filed the complaint on October 16, citing her “erratic behavior” after she withdrew and then refiled her certificate of candidacy (COC) on the same day.
In a statement, Vergara dismissed the petition as “illogical,” arguing that it is a tactic to undermine her as the incumbent mayor.
Umali’s team contends that Vergara’s actions mock the election process, stating that being an incumbent does not exempt her from being labeled a nuisance candidate.
According to Section 69 of the Omnibus Election Code, a candidate may be declared a nuisance if they are found to have no bona fide intention to run.
