Filipina boxer Aira Villegas won a bronze medal in the women’s 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics after losing to Turkiye’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the semifinals.
Despite a strong performance, Villegas was outmatched by Cakiroglu, who scored dominant early rounds and secured the victory with a series of effective punches.
The bout’s judges scored it 30-27 three times and 30-26 twice in favor of Cakiroglu.
Villegas showed resilience by landing a notable punch in the second round, though it was ruled a slip.
The Philippines’ medal tally now stands at four, with another boxer, Nesthy Petecio, set to compete for a gold medal against China’s Wu Yu.
