PHILIPPINES SHOULD INITIATE FRESH ARBITRATION CASE AGAINST CHINA, CARPIO URGES

Retired Supreme Court senior associate justice Antonio Carpio urged the Philippines to file another arbitration case against China after Beijing opposed Manila’s claim to an extended continental shelf in the West Philippine Sea.

Carpio believes the Philippines would likely win the case based on the 2016 Arbitral Award invalidating China’s nine-dash-line claim. He emphasized the need to resolve the dispute through the UNCLOS tribunal, as China’s claims are over 350 nautical miles away from its shores.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the presence of China’s largest coast guard vessel in the Escoda Shoal, within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile EEZ.

PCG officials are exploring further arbitration while maintaining efforts for a peaceful settlement through diplomatic channels.
