PHILIPPINES’ SCHOOL REOPENING MARKS NEW K TO 10 CURRICULUM TRIAL

Over 22 million students have officially enrolled for the school year 2023-2024, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

They expect around 28 million students to join this year, and some private schools have already started a few weeks ago.

Around 30 schools in 6 different regions will be part of a special test program called the “Matatag Curriculum.”

This program has been developed over 2 years and will be tested this school year. It aims to help students become better at reading, writing, and math. The pilot program will start with kindergarten, and Grades 1, 4, and 7.

The new curriculum will be introduced gradually until 2028. It aims to make the current curriculum less crowded and focus more on important skills.

They have removed around 70 percent of the things students used to learn. They have also reduced the number of subjects from 7 to 5.

Now, students will learn Language, Reading and Writing, Math, and also about being proud of their country and having good manners.

Education officials believe that changing the way kids learn, especially with the K to 12 program, will help them do better in the long run.

They think this is especially important now because students have had a hard time with school during the pandemic.

They are also looking at how they can improve the way students learn in Grades 11 and 12, which is the senior high school level.
