The Philippines is no longer the world’s second-largest banana exporter, having been surpassed by Guatemala, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Last year, Guatemala exported 2.6 million metric tons (MT) of bananas, overtaking the Philippines which shipped 2.3 million MT. Ecuador retained its position as the top exporter with 6.2 million MT.
The Philippines’ decline is attributed to a shortfall in domestic output caused by the spread of fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (TR4) and other issues.
Despite a 3.4% increase in shipments in 2023, the country struggled to keep pace with global demand, while Guatemala saw a 17.5% rise in exports.
