The Philippines is considering a Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with South Korea, according to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., who cited the growing list of countries the Philippines is engaging for military cooperation.
The announcement came during the closing ceremony of the Balikatan joint exercises, which saw participation or observation from 19 nations, including South Korea.
Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro confirmed that formal discussions for the VFA would begin after South Korea’s presidential elections, emphasizing the value of enhancing defense ties due to existing military interoperability.
The Philippines previously purchased FA-50 fighter jets from South Korea and is eyeing more in a potential ₱40-billion deal.
A VFA with Seoul would add to similar agreements the Philippines holds with the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
