PHILIPPINE SENATE PRESIDENT SUGGESTS BOYCOTTING CHINESE GOODS AND COMPANIES

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri suggested boycotting Chinese products and companies to protest against China’s continued harassment in Philippine waters.

Zubiri proposed that the Philippines should also find other trading partners like the United States, European Union, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asian countries to grow and improve the country’s economy without relying on China.

He added that the Philippines may reopen its free trade agreements with other countries.

Zubiri believes that boycotting Chinese-made products and Chinese companies coming into the country would show the nation’s anger towards China.

Other lawmakers have made the same call before against China, such as Governor Joey Salceda in 2011, who called on Filipinos to boycott Chinese products due to Beijing’s bullying.

Recently, Senator Risa Hontiveros also joined calls to ban Chinese Communication Construction Company (CCCC), a state-owned Chinese company in the Philippines, from the country.

The boycott and ban calls were made in response to China’s water cannon attack on Philippine vessels delivering supplies to Filipino troops stationed at the Ayungin Shoal.
