The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reopened its investigation into the 2020 murder of retired general Wesley Barayuga, following allegations implicating high-ranking officials, including National Police Commissioner Edilberto Leonardo and former PCSO General Manager Royina Garma.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil announced the investigation after Lt. Col. Santie Mendoza claimed that Leonardo and Garma orchestrated the assassination for a payment of P300,000.
Mendoza testified that he felt coerced into participating in the plot, which he believed was ordered directly by Garma.
The PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) will lead the renewed inquiry, focusing on thoroughly reviewing evidence in light of Mendoza’s revelations.
Barayuga’s murder remains unsolved, and his former Philippine Military Academy classmates have expressed hope that the investigation will bring justice after four years.
