The Philippine government has requested an Interpol “red notice” to aid in the arrest of former Negros Oriental Congressman Arnolfo Teves, who is currently in Timor Leste.
Teves, who faces multiple charges including murder and attempted murder, fled to Timor Leste and sought asylum following his involvement in the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.
Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez explained that the red notice is a request for global law enforcement to locate and detain Teves pending extradition.
Despite Teves’ legal maneuvers to block his extradition, including a complaint to the UN Human Rights Council, Timor Leste’s court has largely rejected these motions.
If extradition is granted, Teves will be returned to the Philippines within a 20 to 40-day period to face his charges.
