The Philippine Coast Guard has accused Chinese vessels of engaging in “dangerous” maneuvers during a nine-day patrol near Scarborough Shoal, a disputed reef in the South China Sea.
The patrol, conducted by the Philippine vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua, aimed to ensure the safety of Filipino fishermen and deliver provisions.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, Chinese Coast Guard vessels performed risky maneuvers, including crossing the bow of the Philippine vessel and shadowing it on more than 40 occasions.
Chinese Coast Guard spokesman Gan Yu responded, alleging that the Philippine vessel had intruded into the waters illegally and asserting that China’s actions were by the law.
Tensions in the region have escalated, with previous standoffs and collisions between Chinese and Philippine vessels. Scarborough Shoal remains a contentious issue, with China claiming sovereignty over the area despite an international tribunal ruling against its claims.
Chinese and Philippine officials have recently agreed on the necessity for closer dialogue to address maritime emergencies in the region.
