PHILIPPINE AIR FORCE PLANS TO ACQUIRE ‘FLYING RADARS’

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is seeking to acquire airborne early warning and control system (AEWACS) platforms to enhance its long-range surveillance and air defense capabilities.

PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo said the proposal is part of the Re-Horizon capability list and has been submitted to higher offices, with further guidance expected from the Department of National Defense.

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. emphasized that acquiring AEWACS, alongside multi-role fighters (MRFs) and aerial tankers, is essential to forming a complete and operational force package.

The move comes as part of the country’s broader military modernization amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, although the government maintains it is not directly linked to China’s actions.

Meanwhile, the Philippines welcomed the Quad’s recent statement supporting maritime law and regional peace, particularly the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award, as tensions in the Indo-Pacific continue to rise.
