PHILHEALTH URGED TO PAUSE PREMIUMS AMID SURPLUS FUNDS

Lawmakers, led by Marikina Rep. Stella Quimbo, urged PhilHealth to suspend premium collections for 2025, citing its substantial surplus funds.

Speaker Martin Romualdez emphasized that the suspension could provide relief to Filipinos facing economic hardships while ensuring members’ contributions directly benefit their healthcare needs.

Agri Rep. Wilbert Lee proposed House Bill No. 11297 to amend the Universal Health Care Act, focusing on improving benefits and balancing administrative costs with fund management.

PhilHealth reported collecting ₱195 billion in premiums last year, but lawmakers questioned the agency’s ability to efficiently utilize its growing reserves.

Romualdez also called for a congressional probe to ensure PhilHealth’s funds are properly managed and its actuarial practices aligned with members’ needs.
