The Philippines and the United States have agreed to intensify their cooperation in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) following China’s recent aggressive actions in the disputed waters.
The decision came after a phone call between Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and US Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III. During the call, Austin reiterated the US’s ironclad commitment to the Philippines and its support for Manila’s efforts to defend its sovereign rights in accordance with international law.
This follows reports that the China Coast Guard (CCG) rammed and water cannoned Philippine vessels on a mission to the BRP Sierra Madre. In a separate incident, a Chinese coast guard vessel also water cannoned vessels of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) headed to Bajo de Masinloc.
The US condemned China’s actions, calling them “unprovoked” and “reckless.” Several other countries, including Australia, Japan, and Canada, have also expressed support for Manila and criticized China’s recent behavior in the WPS.
China, however, defended its actions, claiming that its Coast Guard acted “professionally” and “restrainedly” in accordance with domestic and international law.
The Philippines and the US are expected to work closely together in the coming months to address China’s growing aggression in the WPS. This may include joint patrols, exercises, and diplomatic initiatives.
