PH STRENGTHENS TIES WITH CANADA ON SUSTAINABLE MINING, CRITICAL MINERALS

The Philippines and Canada signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Energy and Natural Resources to strengthen cooperation on critical minerals, responsible mining, clean energy, and environmental protection.

The agreement was signed by Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney witnessing the ceremony.

It aims to tap the Philippines’ mineral potential, which officials estimate could cover about 9 million hectares with potential deposits.

The partnership also includes cooperation on digital mining governance, improved waste management, and the use of geoscience and artificial intelligence for mineral exploration.

Philippine officials said the agreement builds on earlier talks and allows the country to learn from Canada’s advanced and responsible mining practices.
