Philippine Defense Chief, Gilberto Teodoro, has ordered an increase in military presence in the northernmost islands near Taiwan to strengthen Manila’s territorial defense capabilities.
During his visit to naval facilities in Batanes, which is less than 200 km from Taiwan, Teodoro called for the development of more structures on the remote islands.
The Bashi Channel, located between these islands and Taiwan, is considered a crucial passage for vessels traveling between the Western Pacific and the contested South China Sea.
The Chinese military frequently sends ships and aircraft through this channel.
Teodoro’s visit signifies the Philippines’ commitment to territorial defense and national security. The Defense Secretary emphasized that Batanes is vital for the country’s northern baseline.
