PH AND US DEFENSE LEADERS REAFFIRM ALLIANCE AMID WEST PHILIPPINE SEA WATER CANNON INCIDENT

The defense leaders of the Philippines and the United States have reaffirmed their strong alliance, with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III condemning China’s use of water cannons against Filipino vessels in the West Philippine Sea.

According to a statement by the Pentagon on Wednesday, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Austin reiterated their commitment to enhancing cooperation, including strengthening joint training, promoting compatibility, and assisting in the modernization of the Philippine Armed Forces.

During their discussion, they also addressed China’s recent aggressive actions in the disputed waters, where China blocked the resupply mission of Philippine Coast Guard vessels to the BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal.

Austin emphasized that China’s risky maneuvers in the West Philippine Sea jeopardize the safety of Filipino ships and their crew. He highlighted that China’s actions disrupt the existing order and directly threaten regional peace and stability.

Furthermore, Austin stood by the Philippines’ right to engage in lawful maritime activities, as upheld by the 2016 arbitration ruling that favored the country over China’s extensive claims in the disputed waters.

Austin pointed out that the Mutual Defense Treaty also covers Philippine public vessels, aircraft, and armed forces in the Pacific and the West Philippine Sea, including the Coast Guard.

“The Secretaries have committed to finding an opportunity for an in-person meeting in the near future and have reiterated their dedication to standing shoulder-to-shoulder as allies, working towards security, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond,” stated the Pentagon release.
