The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rebuffed China’s accusations of American influence in the West Philippine Sea, calling them “fabricated narratives” aimed at deflecting blame for rising tensions.
The PCG’s response, led by spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela, targeted an editorial in China’s Global Times newspaper suggesting the US fueled the conflict. Tarriela countered that China’s actions, including harassment of Filipino vessels and disregard for territorial claims, were the true source of conflict.
“China seems lost in its own deceptions, blind to how its actions create conflict,” Tarriela stated. He further highlighted the increasing skepticism within China itself towards the government’s narrative, suggesting the truth is gaining traction.
The PCG remains vigilant against “bullies,” Tarriela declared and lauded the support of nations backing the Philippines’ position on the West Philippine Sea. He emphasized that true allies, unlike China, respect territorial rights and don’t engage in aggressive tactics.
This latest exchange underscores the ongoing friction in the contested waters, as China continues to disregard Philippine protests against its territorial incursions and provocative maneuvers. Recent incidents, like the water cannon attacks on Filipino boats delivering supplies, further exacerbate the tensions.
