ONION FARMS HIT BY PESTS, BUT NO IMPACT ON NATIONAL SUPPLY – DA

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has mobilized the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) to assist Pangasinan.n farmers affected by an armyworm infestation, which is described as an isolated case.

DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa emphasized that the infestation is seasonal and will not impact the country’s onion production, which saw a 40% increase last year.

The government has refrained from importing red onions due to adequate supply, with harvest season nearing.

Retail prices for onions remain stable, ranging from ₱100 to ₱200 per kilo, far below the ₱720 per kilo spike in 2022 caused by hoarding.

To support farmers, the government has allocated ₱1.6 billion for cold storage facilities to preserve farm products.
