NO LOYALTY CHECK NEEDED AMID MARCOS-DUTERTE CONFLICT, SAYS AFP

On Tuesday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) stated that there is no need for a loyalty check within its ranks, despite the heated exchanges between President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and former President Rodrigo Duterte.

AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Padilla confirmed that AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. stated that a loyalty check is unnecessary. This statement came in response to questions regarding any division within the military ranks due to the moves for Charter change through people’s initiative, which Duterte strongly opposed.

During a prayer rally in Davao City, Duterte criticized the people’s initiative and accused the Marcoses of attempting to perpetuate themselves in power. He also referred to President Marcos as “bangag” (high on illegal drugs) and called on the military and police to protect the Constitution against alleged threats.

Colonel Padilla emphasized that the AFP will continue to follow the Constitution and fulfill its sworn duty. She also stated that General Brawner had called on every soldier to remain non-partisan and professional.

Furthermore, she emphasized that the focus of the AFP remains on ending the local terrorist insurgency problem and transitioning to territorial defense.
