A Nigerian court sentenced 15 Asian foreign nationals—including 11 Filipinos—to one year in prison and fined each one million naira (about $630) for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.
The group was found guilty of recruiting young Nigerians to commit identity theft and impersonate foreigners in scams targeting victims mainly in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also ordered the confiscation of devices used in the crimes.
Nigeria, known for its “Yahoo Boys” internet fraudsters, has seen foreign cybercrime syndicates exploiting the country’s weak cybersecurity.
The EFCC continues cracking down on such networks, with hundreds of arrests made in recent operations targeting both locals and foreign suspects.
