More than 60% of the world’s population, which is nearly five billion people, are using social media, according to a recent study by digital advisory firm Kepios.
This means that a majority of the world’s population is actively using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others.
Over the past year, the number of social media users has increased by about 3.7%.
This growth is happening alongside the increasing number of people using the internet, which is now at about 64.5% of the world’s population, or around 5.19 billion people.
Different regions have varying levels of social media usage.
For example, in East and Central Africa, only one out of every 11 people are on social media.
In India, the most populous country in the world, about one out of three people use social media.
People are also spending more time on social media than before. On average, users spend about 2 hours and 26 minutes per day on these platforms.
However, there are significant differences between countries, with Brazilians spending an average of 3 hours and 49 minutes per day on social media, while the Japanese spend less than an hour.
Interestingly, the typical social media user is active on seven different platforms.
Some of the most popular apps are owned by Meta, which includes WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.
Meanwhile, China’s three apps, WeChat, TikTok, and the local version of Douyin are among the favorites.
Additionally, Twitter, Messenger, and Telegram are also popular social media platforms used by many people worldwide.
