The Philippines and China signed an agreement on July 2 to enhance maritime communication mechanisms, following recent confrontations at Ayungin Shoal.
This includes establishing communication channels between their foreign ministries and coast guards.
National Security Adviser Eduardo Año affirmed that resupply missions to Philippine troops on the Sierra Madre would remain purely Philippine operations, though the U.S. has pledged support if necessary.
The U.S. has reiterated its commitment under the Mutual Defense Treaty to defend Philippine assets in Ayungin Shoal.
Meanwhile, tensions continue as China asserts its claims over the South China Sea, despite a 2016 arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines.
