NAVY AFFIRMS BRP SIERRA MADRE WILL STAY IN AYUNGIN

Despite China’s increasing presence in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine Navy asserts that the BRP Sierra Madre will remain at Ayungin Shoal to uphold national territorial integrity.

Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad emphasized the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ mandate to defend the nation’s territory, amidst reports of China’s largest coast guard vessel anchoring in the area.

The National Security Council (NSC) condemned China’s false claims that the Sierra Madre is causing environmental damage, pointing out that China has been responsible for significant harm to the marine environment, as documented by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 and a 2023 report by the Center for Strategic International Studies.

The NSC highlighted the severe damage caused by China’s island-building activities and illegal fishing practices, which have degraded coral reefs and marine biodiversity.

The Philippines calls on the international community to counter China’s disinformation and protect the region’s marine environment through coordinated multilateral efforts.
