MMDA SHUTS DOWN WHEELCHAIR RAMP FOR UPGRADES

The wheelchair ramp at the Edsa Busway Philam station in Quezon City has been temporarily closed for “improvements” after being criticized for its steep incline, which made it inaccessible to persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Don Artes announced that a wheelchair platform or vertical lift will be installed to improve accessibility, with the ramp expected to reopen in one to two months.

Artes attributed the ramp’s design flaws to the “height and space limitations” of the nearby Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and acknowledged that the initial design was less than ideal.

The ramp’s issues gained prominence during National Disability Rights Week, highlighting its failure to meet PWD accessibility standards.

The MMDA plans to assist PWD passengers with personnel until the ramp’s improvements are completed.
