President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called for amendments to the 25-year-old Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) to stop power utilities from passing systems loss charges and the corresponding value-added tax on those charges to consumers.
In his State of the Nation Address, Marcos said consumers should not bear the cost of electricity losses caused by transmission inefficiencies or illegal connections, drawing strong support from lawmakers.
He also urged Congress to pass the proposed “Sariling Kuryente Act” to make installing solar panels and battery storage systems simpler and more affordable for households.
The President renewed his push for nuclear energy, saying modern nuclear technology is safe and can help strengthen energy security while lowering electricity costs.
Marcos added that the government is monitoring around 200 power projects with a combined capacity of nearly 10,000 megawatts and is advancing regional energy cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
