President Marcos has signed Republic Act 12122, which establishes a three-year fixed term for the commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The law, signed on February 18, amends Section 5 of the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009 and sets the term to begin on the date of appointment, with retirement or relief by the President marking the end of the term.
This new law applies to PCG commandants appointed under RA 9993 and other related laws, and it repeals any conflicting laws or regulations.
Proponents of the law argue that a fixed term will ensure stability in the leadership of the Coast Guard.
The law is effective as of its publication in the Official Gazette, and current PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gavan will retire on February 21 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
