A Filipino fishing boat, FBCA Prince Elmo 2, was allegedly rammed by an unidentified vessel near the Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea on January 30.
Five of the eight crew members were rescued by a passing Vietnamese cargo vessel, MV Dong An, on February 16, while three others remain missing.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is investigating the incident and has coordinated with the Vessel Traffic Management System to identify the responsible vessel.
In related news, the Philippines will protest the “reckless” actions of a Chinese naval helicopter that endangered a Philippine aircraft near Panatag Shoal.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about China’s “huge presence” of Coast Guard vessels around Ayungin Shoal, further escalating tensions in the region.
