President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for further strengthening the capabilities of the Philippine Navy as the country faces evolving security challenges, emphasizing its vital role in protecting sovereignty and maintaining peace in the West Philippine Sea.
During the Navy’s 128th anniversary celebration, Marcos led the commissioning of the new BRP Rajah Lakandula, describing it as a major step toward a modern and self-reliant naval force capable of safeguarding national interests.
He also directed the defense sector to deepen cooperation with allies and friendly nations while assuring continuous government support for the welfare of naval personnel.
Meanwhile, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea confirmed the presence of a 6×6-meter floating structure with an apparent antenna inside Scarborough Shoal, amid ongoing concerns over Chinese activities in the area.
The Armed Forces said naval vessels would be deployed to monitor the structure as authorities continue surveillance operations.
