The Marcos administration is carefully studying the impact of online gambling amid criticisms over the President’s silence on the issue in his recent SONA, Malacañang said.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro emphasized the need to distinguish problems caused by licensed versus illegal gambling operations, noting that government revenues from licensed online gambling fund social services.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) collected around P50 billion from online gaming in 2024, with half supporting programs like healthcare and sports.
Meanwhile, the Senate Games and Amusements Committee, led by Sen. Erwin Tulfo, is set to investigate calls to ban or regulate online gambling, balancing concerns about addiction and the risk of underground operations.
Tulfo acknowledged strong public and senatorial opposition to online gambling but warned that a ban might drive the activity underground, complicating enforcement efforts.
