President Marcos has instructed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to restore the Philippine National Police (PNP)’s budget for information technology projects, addressing changes made by Congress to the administration’s expenditure plan.
The budget cuts affected key components of the PNP’s IT program, including reductions to the national police clearance system and the safe camp security system.
As a result, the intelligence fund allocation will be redirected to enhance the PNP’s 911 emergency response system, following instructions from Marcos.
Additionally, the PNP’s 911 system has been plagued by prank calls, a problem made worse by the lack of integration with the national ID system, which Remulla says contributes to issues like SIM card fraud.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is working on deploying advanced systems and measures, such as police body cameras and vehicle locator devices, to improve the effectiveness of emergency responses.
