MALACAÑANG STEPS UP SUPPORT AS PH AIMS TO AVOID SPORTS BAN FOR DOPING ISSUES

Malacañang has stepped in to assist in fast-tracking anti-doping requirements as the Philippines faces the looming threat of a potential ban from all major international sporting events by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to alleged non-compliance.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine National Anti-Doping Organization (PHI-NADO) are spearheading efforts to comply with WADA’s standards, with the Office of the President providing necessary resources.

PSC chairman Dickie Bachmann expressed gratitude for Malacañang’s assistance during a Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) forum, highlighting the urgency to support PHI-NADO in fulfilling anti-doping needs.

Bachmann emphasized the need for financial backing from Malacañang to ensure PHI-NADO’s independence and efficiency.

The looming WADA ultimatum, which had a February 13 deadline and has been appealed by the PSC, underscores the importance of addressing anti-doping measures before WADA inspections in March. Critical requirements include effective doping test distribution plans and timely prosecution of doping cases.

Failure to comply may result in Filipino athletes competing internationally without representing the Philippines, losing WADA funding and hosting privileges, and exclusion from regional, continental, and world championship events. Despite the challenges, the PSC remains optimistic, urging athletes to continue their qualifying bids while working towards resolving the issue.
